“We gave it away,” Steve Komphela acknowledged after the one-all draw to Bidvest Wits. “We conceded a goal in the last minute. That’s it."
The Kaizer Chiefs coach was visible furious about the way his team allowed the Students to equalise just before the final whistle of the referee.
Amakhosi had taken the lead shortly after the half-time break, thanks to a fine goal from Siphiwe Tshabalala, his second league goal this season.
Wits, meanwhile, had one of their players sent off in the first half. Komphela remarked that a team that is one-man down, often “starts to work harder, while the level of concentration also gets better.”
The coach had to admit that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune made numerous saves to stop Wits from doing even more damage. “Itu a great talent and he’s very experienced,” Komphela commented about Khune.
He also had some words about Wiseman Meyiwa, the 17-year-old talented midfielder, who made his second start since joining the first team from the club’s youth development structures at the beginning of this season.
“He did well,” Komphela said about Meyiwa. “I am trying to guide his movements on the pitch. It was his second game and he came through it with flying colours. Wiseman wrote his own chapter. Now we have to manage the expectations about him.”
After the draw, Chiefs are in 8th position on the Absa Premiership log with five points from four matches.
It will be a busy week for the Glamour Boys, as the team will next face Maritzburg United on the road at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday, 20 September (kick-off at 19:30). This will be followed by another home game at FNB Stadium against Golden Arrows on Saturday, 23 September (kick-off at 20:15).
