Glamour Boys Tackle Masandawana

Kaizer Chiefs hosted a joint media conference with opponents Mamelodi Sundowns at the offices of the club’s medical scheme partners, Medshield Medical Scheme in Randburg on Wednesday. The teams were represented by their respective coaches and players as they previewed the pick of this weekend’s Absa Premiership fixtures, which pits the two giants of South African football against each other for the second time this season on Saturday, 27 January 2018 at the FNB stadium.

Dr Stanley Moloabi, the Principal Officer of Medshield, welcomed the teams’ officials to their headquarters: “This is a momentus occasion for us at Medshield. Not only has our partnership with Kaizer Chiefs given our brand access to South Africans who love football, it also emphasises the many healthcare benefits available when selecting Medshield as your healthcare partner. Having both Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns at our offices is truly amazing and we look forward to a great game on Saturday,” he said.

The two teams last met in October 2017 at Loftus Versfeld. Kaizer Chiefs were triumphant on the day and pocketed all the three points after beating Sundowns 2-1. Siyabonga Ngezana marked his debut for Amakhosi with a goal and Bernard Parker added a second for the Glamour Boys, before Themba Zwane pulled one back for the hosts.

“We had a lot of unfortunate injuries and suspensions when we played Sundowns in October but the boys understood the importance of the game,” says Steve Komphela. “Games of this magnitude really test players’ mettle and winning is always sweet for our supporters. We always do it for them because not only points matter; there’s also a lot of pride at stake.”

Both teams have been busy strengthening their squads during the current transfer window and, with each bringing in four new signings since 1 January, supporters can look forward to a pulsating game.

“We are looking a little stronger this time around, with Tsepo Masilela, Kabelo Mahlasela and Bernard Parker injured; and Joseph Molangoane suspended. We believe our soldiers are ready to go to battle and are aware that we are facing very tough opponents,” added Komphela.

Both teams’ tails are up after winning their weekend clashes – Sundowns defeated Platinum Stars, while Amakhosi trounced Baroka. Added to that, Sundowns occupy the first position on the log with 34 points after 18 matches. Chiefs are five points behind them in third place on the standings, having played the same number of games.

“Football supporters are salivating and looking forward to the game, mainly because of last weekend’s results and the log standing,” says Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung. “Looking at the recent history of the encounter, reports about the match across all media platforms and in the public space, we are expecting an electric atmosphere from the thousands of supporters who will descend on the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

At the press conference, Kaizer Chiefs also mentioned that they have reached a partnership with Kaelo Xelus who will provide the players and Kaizer Chiefs staff with health insurance products, specifically Fusion Gap Cover.

To ensure that excitement swells to a peak by kick-off time, together with our main sponsors Vodacom, we will host a roadshow in Alexandra’s Alex Mall as part of our retail and insurance expansion strategy on Saturday, 27 January 2018. There will be lots of fun, games and prizes for the supporters and shoppers from 10:00 to 15:00. The Kaizer Chiefs Insurance store, which is situated at the mall and has been open for business since June 2017 will be on hand to assist supporters who would like to purchase genuine club merchandise.

Kaizer Chiefs’ mobile business, KC Mobile, will help supporters Connect4Life when they buy the KC Mobile Starter Pack, while Kaizer Chiefs Insurance will help supporters secure their family’s futures with KC Insurance products and services that will be available at the roadshow at the Alex Mall.

Kaizer Chiefs’ coach Steve Komphela concluded the press conference with an assurance to fans that, “Preparations have been going well with the new players settling in well and understanding our style.”

The tickets for the match are sold at the Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide. The cost per ticket is R40 for adults and R10 for children. Parking tickets in the designated parking areas around the stadium precinct can be bought from R30.

Toyota-driving supporters will enjoy free and secure parking at the Toyota Zone. All they have to do is to collect tickets at the Toyota dealership in Soweto on Klipspruit Valley Drive or at the Kaizer Chiefs village on Friday and Saturday. Drivers will be required to produce their match ticket and are encouraged to wear their Gold & Black colours.

At the stadium, Kaizer Chiefs retail will be set up at Gate K (turnstile 18) and in the foyer that leads up to the presidential and super suite for those who are interested in purchasing exclusive club merchandise.

“We are looking forward to an excellent match, highlighted by skilful and riveting football,” concludes Jessica Motaung. “We have prioritised the importance of the fans and have made every effort to enhance their experience of the occasion from a security point of view. Therefore, we implore all supporters to please be safe on the roads, arrive early at the stadium and enjoy the entertainment before the match kicks off at 20:15.”
