“Mario never asked a question about money,” Chairman Kaizer Motaung affectionally reacted upon the sad news of the passing on of Kaizer Chiefs’ former coach, Mario ‘The Godfather’ Tuani. “He would just carry on with his duties without mentioning anything about money.”
‘The Godfather’, as he was fondly known, died on Sunday in his native country Chile.
Tuani coached the Glamour Boys in 1979 and early 1980, helping Amakhosi to win the league title and the Mainstay Cup.
“When Mario joined us he was already in South Africa,” remembers Motaung. “He coached several clubs and, amongst his accolades, he left an indelible mark by helping us to win the league title in 1979, the first time we won this trophy after the multiracial NPSL started a year before.”
The Chairman recalled Tuani’s man-management skill, “He knew exactly how to deal with each player. His man-management skill was outstanding. Mario was one of a kind.”
Motaung hailed ‘The Godfather’ as one of the great servants of football.
“On behalf of Kaizer Chiefs, I wish to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Tuani family and friends,” concluded the Chiefs Chairman. “I wish them strength to accept that their loved one has earned his medals, ran a good race and recorded a good innings. Therefore, let us accept that he deserves a rest in the eternal peace.”
Rest in Peace ‘The Godfather’. You may be gone but you’ll never be forgotten.
