It was a wet evening with a lot of rain, which meant that the pitch wasn’t exactly conducive for good quality soccer. However, despite the bad weather, there was a lively atmosphere at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
“They missed a penalty,” the Kaizer Chiefs coach continues, “once more congratulations to Itumeleng Khune for saving it.”
“We had our chances, but we did not take them so we will take this draw. Cavin Johnson is a fine coach and he had a good game plan. They hassled us, especially in midfield. One has to admire their competitive spirit.”
Erick Mathoho watched from the bench as coach Komphela handed the Zimbabwean defender Teenage Hadebe his debut in the Gold and Black colours. “Teenage gave us the balance in our backline of three centre-backs, because he’s left-footed. I thought he passed the test on debut.”
The draw means that Chiefs are now in sixth position on Absa Premiership log with 15 points, just three shy of log leaders Baroka FC.
“The league is tight this season,” comments Komphela. “Collecting a point is huge given the competitiveness of the league this season. AmaZulu stood their ground. Many teams play to a draw, because there’s so much at stake.”
This was Amakhosi’s sixth draw from 11 matches this season. “We have a lot of homework to do,” concludes Komphela. “We have worked hard on our defence and have recorded numerous clean sheets. We are happy with that. Our finishing, however, remains a concern. We will work on it though and hope to improve in our next match.”
