South Africa’s national women’s football team will kick off their maiden World Cup appearance on Saturday when they face Spain in the group stages of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted in France.
Banyana Banyana will take on Spain in the first game of Group B at the Stade Océane, Le Havre on Saturday, 08 June at 18:00.
“I have followed Banyana Banyana through the qualifiers and they have shown they have all what it takes to launch a challenge at the World Cup stage,” adds Motaung. “Reaching the final and only losing to Nigeria on penalties in 2018 AFCON was a good indicator of the rising level of women’s football in South Africa. Coach Desiree Ellis has done wonders with the team - she’s done some sterling work. I wish her and the team success in this historical football moment.”
China and Germany are the other teams in Group B. The top two finishers will qualify for the knockout stage of the World Cup.
“The qualifying and final preparation are done - now it’s time for Banyana to hoist the South African flag high,” concludes Jessica. “I have faith in their capabilities to win their matches and progress to the final stages of the tournament. It won’t be easy, but with the kind of positive attitude and spirit they’ve demonstrated, I am sure they will return with the trophy. Good luck to the ladies!”
Banyana Banyana will face China on Thursday, 13 June in their second game and will conclude their group stages with a tussle against Germany on Monday, 17 June.
