Chiefs gained a massive 3-points to make an almost perfect start to the 2019/20 season and command top of the log position.
“I’m tactically flexible, that’s how I’ve been in my 25 years of coaching,” reflected Middendorp, “here and there we wanted to do some of the things last season already but it didn’t work out, and I’m glad it is working now.”
Chiefs recovered from an early onslaught from Cape Town City to win 2-1 courtesy of Daniel Cardoso and Kearyn Baccus’ goal.
“Now we have the material to adapt to what we want to do tactically,” said Middendorp, “We are working on flexibility, and to get all the players able to take different roles in the field.”
Middendorp revealed the thought processing of the substitution of the fullback, “Ntiya-Ntiya was on a yellow and hence we decided to pull him out and roped in Parker who did well in that role.”
“In the first half already, even after conceding an early goal we were always in the game,” said Middendorp, “I saw Kermit in Attridgeville (playing against Mamelodi Sundowns) and he was always going to be a poser.” Kermit was the scorer for City in the opening minutes of the match.
“We are still having players that we are managing,” said Middendorp, “players such as Happy Mashiane and James Kotei for example, it means we still have a lot of potential to explore. It is still early days,”
“I trust these players very much,” said Middendorp, “we have done a lot of preparation in this team, in and outside of the field. We have selected a good squad, and we are working on other players to get them ready as well-think about Ngezana and Sasman for example.”
“We are always working on scouting,” said Middendorp about the transfer window of players which is about to close on 2 September, “but for now we aren’t looking desperately,”
“Daniel Akpeyi needs the support just like any other player,” concludes Middendorp, “we will continue working with Itumeleng Khune to get him ready. It is just not right to have the supporters shouting Khune’s name after a few minutes of the game. For us it is healthy and a pleasure to have SA and Nigeria’s number one goalkeepers in our squad.”
