Kabelo Mahlasela made his official debut for Kaizer Chiefs when he came on as substitute in Tuesday’s league game against Bidvest Wits. “It felt good to wear the Gold and Black jersey for the first time in an official match. It was an honour and a privilege.”
The midfielder joined Amakhosi from Bloemfontein Celtic during the January transfer window. But he injured his knee during his first training session at Chiefs Village and, as a result, was out for the rest of the season.
“That was tough,” he reflects, “because the fans expected me to play, but I couldn’t due to the injury. I am happy to be now fully fit.”
Mahlasela got game time in the Maize Cup and the Mpumalanga Cultural Xperience Cup during the pre-season.
However, the official debut of the 27-year-old came against Wits, replacing Leonardo Castro in the 77th minute. The attacking midfielder made an immediate impact, making some excellent dribbling runs and showing why Kaizer Chiefs signed him.
“We could have won,” Mahlasela reflected on the 3-1 loss to the Clever Boys. “We created more chances than them, but it wasn’t to me.”
Saturday awaits Free State Stars in an MTN8 quarterfinal fixture. “It’s a cup game, so we have to win or we are out. There are no second chances. But we are the stronger side and we will fight as a team to make it to the next round.”
Mahlasela also had a few comments on Women’s Day, Thursday, 9 August. “I want to tell women in South Africa and the whole world that they are loved and have to be respected. We, as men, have to stop abusing women.”
Chiefs will face Free State Stars in an MTN8 quarterfinal match at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 11 August (kick-off is at 18:00).
