Kaizer Chiefs mid-season window period wrap
The mid-season window period has been unusually quiet domestically as many clubs are focusing on cementing their positions on the log.
While it has been quiet, Amakhosi made some reinforcements to the current team before the closure of the window period at midnight. This is mainly to ensure that the team competes ferociously during this latter part of the 2018/19 season.
The start of the new season has not lived up to expectations as the team got knocked out of two cup competitions and are not in a position we are accustomed to on the log.
The first change made was that of our coach in December when Ernst Middendorp took over the reins from Giovanni Solinas.
In the playing department, Kaizer Chiefs have added four new players to the squad, with one exiting the team.
The first announcement made was that of Happy Mashiane’s promotion from the club’s Youth Development Academy to the senior team. The Tembisa-born defender has impressed many with his skill and sublime work on the left side of the field. He has already played two games for the Glamour Boys since signing his first team contract.
“Today we acquired the services of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi from Chippa United and right-back Reeve Frosler from Bidvest Wits,” confirms Bobby Motaung. “They will help bolster our goalkeeping department and backline.”
Both players have represented their national teams with Frosler having played for South Africa once at senior level and Akpeyi has 14 caps for Nigeria under his belt. He was in the final squad that represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup staged in Russia last year.
“We are happy to have these players in our team and look forward to them contributing positively to the team,” comments Motaung.
“Apart from Mashiane, we are excited to announce the promotion of another goalkeeper Karabo Molefe. Karabo is only 16 years old but has done well in the development team. With his height and talent, we believe he will be one to watch for the future as he also has an advantage of learning from all the experienced top goalkeepers we have in the team,” adds Motaung.
“We have a fairly young side and we’ve added more young talent, which will inject more young energy in the squad. We hope to go all the way in the Nedbank Cup and challenge for league honours come end of the season.”
Because the club international player quota had reached the limit, Kaizer Chiefs parted ways with left-back Godfrey Walusimbi. The left-back joined Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the current season.
The player has opted to go back home to Uganda.
“We would like to thank Godfrey for his contribution to Kaizer Chiefs and wish him all the best,” concludes Motaung.
The management team will now focus on concluding negotiations with players whose contracts will expire at the end of the season.
