In a somber moment of grief, the Kaizer Chiefs team with Management arrived to pay their respect and pass messages of condolences at Mama Winnie’s home.
“We are here to show support for your loss,” said Football Manager Bobby Motaung. “We are part of the Nation and are equally affected by your loss. Your loss is our loss, for the club and the football community in general. Chiefs were founded in Soweto during the hype of the dark history of apartheid and that is the time in history when Mama Winnie was going through the trials and tribulations. We are here to show solidarity and wish you strength.”
The late Mama Winnie Mandela, Mother of the Nation, passed away on 2 April at the age of 81.
“We came here to demonstrate our appreciation for the work that Mama has done for the Nation,” commented captain Itumeleng Khune. “We are saddened, words cannot express how hurt we are. Mama Winnie gave her all for our well-being. We are now benefiting from her works. We are able to express our talents in a free country and play international football. We wish the family well during this trying time and may you be comforted by the memories of her work.”
The respect which included a moment of prayer was well received by the family. “This is one touching moment that we will never forget. We will cherish her, as she has shone the light for us to move forward as a Nation,” concluded Khune. “We will forever be indebted to Mama Winnie. May her soul rest in the eternal peace!"
The anti-apartheid stalwart will be buried on Saturday, 14 April. The funeral service will take place at Orlando Stadium.
