The Kaizer Chiefs Reserve team played their penultimate DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) game of the 2021/22 season against Sekhukhune Reserves at Makhulong Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The match turned out to be a pulsating affair with the Young Glamour Boys walking away with three points after winning the encounter 2-1.

It was Aiden McCarthy who opened the scoring in the first half for Amakhosi. The young sensation Mfundo Vilakazi scored a stunning freekick to ensure that they went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead. The hosts, Sekhukhune Reserves pulled one back in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Amakhosi won the match.

Coach Vela Khumalo was delighted with the performance and congratulated his lads for putting in the work and ensuring they return to Naturena with maximum points. “Our aim is to stay in the top 8 and not lose our position. The guys scored some brilliant goals and we are proud,” said Khumalo.

“We are the youngest team in the DDC when you look at our average age. We are an attack minded team that’s why we are the second highest scoring team when you look at the stats. There are no challenges offensively and we are an entertaining team when you watch our games – we just need to work on our defence and ensure we stick to our playing philosophy.”

“We have changed the team quite a bit, but not our approach. Another thing is that we lost two players who went for trials overseas in the last number of weeks (referring to Bontle Molefe and Mduduzi Shabalala), but we continued to do well. We were also able to add three players to the senior team,” said Khumalo.

The two goal scorers, McCarthy and Vilakazi were also proud of the goals they scored as they helped the team win the match. They promised to work harder in the last game and prepare for next season.

The Reserve team will play their final match of the season against Baroka Reserves at FNB on Saturday.

In the Gauteng Development League (GDL), Kaizer Chiefs’ four junior teams welcomed Highlands Park to the Kaizer Village on Saturday morning.

The under-13s and under-17s kicked off the proceedings at 9:00 in the morning. The U13 team beat Highlands 6-0, while the U17s lost their match 1-0.

The two games were followed by the under-15s who won 3-1 and the under-19s drew 0-0 against Highlands Park.
