Amongst the most competitive of grassroots tournaments, the four-day festival which has teams from U-7 through to U-14 participating kicks off on Thursday and ends on Sunday. It will see teams competing in various age group divisions with Chiefs sending their U-13 team to represent the club in the Mother City.
The Chiefs U-13s will head to Cape Town on Thursday morning and will participate in the opening ceremony early on Friday evening before they kick off the tournament later on Friday evening. They will play against the hosts FC Kapstadt. Kick-off is at 20h50.
On Saturday, they will participate in two more group games with their first fixture against Oriental Gunners FC at 10h15 they will then end off their group programme with another fixture against Chelsea Bridgeton FC at 15h15 on Saturday afternoon. Should they progress beyond the group stages, the young Amakhosi will participate in the knockout rounds on Sunday and will return to Johannesburg on Monday.
“Tournaments such as the Lucky Star Cup offer youngsters an opportunity to showcase their skills and will help of them develop their talent as they meet other players from other areas from a very young age. We are truly excited about our participation in this tournament as Kaizer Chiefs,” says Kaizer Chiefs Youth Academy’s Sundra Govinder.
Every year approximately 1500 grassroots footballers forming part of over 128 teams from several clubs participate in the tournament dubbed the most successful grassroots football festival in Cape Town. Over 10 000 spectators attended the event last year.
Entrance fee is R10 for adults and R5 for children.
