“That was Kaizer Chiefs’ Golden Era,” Marks Maponyane explains the club’s success in the 80s. “We didn’t want to be second to anybody.”
Kaizer Chiefs TV (KCTV) will cover the 1980s in an exclusive show, which will premiere on Monday evening on SuperSport 4.
The special will be a mixture of footage of trophy wins and individual players combined with interviews with several legends, who wore the Gold & Black in an era when Chiefs collected three league titles and 28 cup trophies.
One of the legends interviewed is Marks ‘Go-Man-Go’ Maponyane, who scored on debut to help Amakhosi to a 2-1 win over Eldorado Park’s Leicester City on 12 April 1981. It was the beginning of an avalanche of goals from the striker for the Glamour Boys in the years to follow.
Another chat about the 80s is with Doctor Khumalo, which is both insightful and humorous.
The legendary midfielder proved to be something special from the moment that he made his official Chiefs debut in a BP Top 8 Cup final first leg match against PG Rangers played in Durban on 15 February 1987. Khumalo had already participated in pre-season games but this was his first-class debut. It’s not often that a player’s first official game is a cup final.
Amakhosi won 3-0 with Marks Maponyane netting all the goals. Chiefs went on to take the trophy after beating Rangers 2-1 in the second leg. It was Khumalo’s first cup win. The midfielder went on to have a fantastic career with the Glamour Boys, starting in 397 official league and cup matches. A magnificent record.
Another giving his views on the eighties is Johannes ‘Chippa’ Molatedi, who joined Amakhosi from Moroka Swallows for a then-record fee of R45 000.
“It’s the professionalism at Chiefs that makes the club stand shoulders above the rest,” the talented midfielder reflects.
