Nike launched the new Nike Mercurial Vapor and Superfly boots last week in London. Khune is a Tier 1 athlete for Nike and a marquee athlete for Mercurial.
South Africa’s middle-distance runner, Semenya, herself a Nike athlete, was excited to personally deliver the new Mercurial Vapor to Khune. “It’s an honour and I feel privileged to do this, especially as Itu is our country’s finest goalkeeper. It’s a dream come true.”
About the Mercurial, she says, “It looks beautiful and it makes me feel like going to the soccer grounds and kick the ball, although of course, as an active athlete, I am not supposed to do this.”
Semenya has visited the Chiefs Village a few times before, but she can’t stop admiring the facilities, “I feel proud to be here at these magnificent grounds.”
After he fitted his new Mercurial Vapor, Khune was asked to kick the ball from long distance straight to Semenya. He succeeds instantly. “This boot is very light and comfortable,” the goalkeeper comments, “it’s out of this world.”
Khune was equally thrilled to see Semenya, “To have the world’s number one 800 metres runner hand over the new Mercurial is a very special moment for me.”
Consequently, he made a promise to Semenya, “Every time I keep a clean sheet, I will dedicate it to you.”
The Mercurial Vapor and Superfly will be on sale in the shops in South Arica from 1 March 2018, although Nike athletes will start wearing the boot in the coming weekend’s matches.
Before leaving Chiefs Village, Semenya says to the Glamour Boys, her favourite soccer club, “The boys must please keep that mantra of discipline, dedication and hard work to be the best.”
