Kaizer Chiefs will play Baroka FC on the road in their third Absa Premiership match of the 2018/2019 season.
Itumeleng Khune is back in the team after missing out on Saturday’s encounter. The goalkeeper had requested leave to attend to a personal matter.
He will replace Virgil Vries, who enjoyed a convincing debut between the posts against Free State Stars. The Namibian goalkeeper, however, sustained an injury in that match and will probably be out for a few weeks.
Joseph Molangoane will be even longer out after having fractured his leg just above the ankle during the MTN8 quarter-final game. ‘Tight’ had to be stretchered off and was taken straight to the hospital. He will be replaced by Siphiwe Tshabalala in the starting line-up.
The Baroka game will be Ramahlwe Mphahlele’s 50th start in the Gold and Black jersey, including league and cup games. He has come on once as substitute and has scored three goals, the last of which game against Mamelodi Sundowns in the opening match of this season.
Amakhosi played three times against Baroka last season. The first was a league clash at home, losing 2-1. Chiefs, however, won the away league encounter (2-1, with Ryan Moon and Leonardo Castro scoring the goals) and the Nedbank Cup quarter-final, which ended in a 1-0 victory thanks to Erick Mathoho’s sole goal.
After Amakhosi’s thumping 3-0 win over Free State Stars in the MTN8 quarter-final encounters, it’s now to get points for the league. The Glamour Boys had two tough opening games to the season, drawing one-all away against Mamelodi Sundowns and being edged 3-1 by Bidvest Wits at home. As a result, Chiefs are in 13th position, having assembled one point from two matches. Baroka are in seventh spot, having three points from their two league matches played so far.
