The ex-Amakhosi defender played against Matsatsantsa in the final of the 2004 Coca-Cola Cup, the predecessor of the Telkom Knockout. Chiefs won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Collins Mbesuma in the 80th minute.
“Even in those years SuperSport was a bit of a hoodoo side for Chiefs,” reflects Kubeka. “We just took it upon ourselves that we weren’t worried about that stigma and that we needed to be 100% committed to win.
“Our mental strength was positive. We even sat down as players and decided, ‘Let’s win this one’.”
Kubeka signed his first professional contract for Kaizer Chiefs in 1999 after having joined the club’s development structures four years earlier. He left the club in 2006. In that historic Coca-Cola Cup final, he played as a left-back, partnering Cyril Nzama, Patrick Mabedi and Siphiwe Mkhonza in defence.
The late John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu celebrated his 39th birthday on the day, coming on for Gerald Sibeko, presently Chiefs’ team manager, who had a superb match, helping to inspire Amakhosi to take the Coca-Cola Cup.
Kubeka is presently a professional life coach and runs Qbeka Sports and Mind Coach. The former defender is convinced that the present Amakhosi squad is more than capable to beat Matsatsantsa on Sunday.
“The loss of the Derby Soweto should be a big motivation for this weekend’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal,” Kubeka points out. “There is still a long season ahead. The players need to have that confident mentality, self-belief, courage and that drive to get a positive outcome.
“The players have to believe that they are at Kaizer Chiefs for a reason. They deserve to be there. I feel confident that we will extract a positive result.”
The Telkom Knockout quarterfinal between Chiefs and SuperSport will take place at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, 4 November (kick-off at 15:00).
Tickets for this cup game are sold at TicketPro (Spar, CNA, Jet, Edgars) outlets nationwide at a cost of R60.
