What Happened
Cape Town City scored a last-minute winner to edge out Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs, by the odd goal in five in a pulsating Absa Premiership encounter in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.
City went in the match as log leaders, one point ahead of Chiefs. The scene was perfectly set for a thrilling battle between the two league chasing teams.
Almost 20 000 people made their way into the Cape Town Stadium to witness the top of the table clash, and it didn’t disappoint.
The win keeps City at the top of the PSL standings.
Coach Steve Komphela made three changes to his starting line-up from the team that played SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup on the weekend. Bruce Bvuma, the first choice ‘keeper for the MDC team, made his senior debut, coming in for skipper Itumeleng Khune, who couldn’t make the trip to the Mother City after sustaining an injury on Saturday. Tsepo Masilela had fully recovered after missing the last match against SuperSport match and replaced injured Sibusiso Khumalo, while Daniel Cardoso joined Erick Mathoho in central defence to fill in for the suspended Lorenzo Gordinho.
It was end-to-end stuff with the first chance coming from as early the 4th minute, Roland Putsche firing just wide. He had another chance in the 7th minute but his free kick also missed the target.
In the 11th minute, club captain Siphiwe Tshabalala came close to scoring when he shot from outside the box but his effort was fisted away by Shuaib Walters for a corner kick.
Two minutes later, City were given a chance to test young Bvuma’s nerve from another free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but again wasted the opportunity.
It didn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken and it was Aubrey Ngoma who was to separate the sides when he finished off an incredible solo run through the Chiefs defence, to net City’s first goal in the 15th minute.
Kaizer Chiefs responded well and Tshabalala levelled matters with brilliant goal in the 20th minute, his deft chip from the edge of the area sailing into an empty net leaving Walters stranded off his line.
Joseph Molangoane did well to beat two defenders in the 33rd minute but his shot was not strong enough to trouble Walters.
A minute later City took the lead with an outstanding goal scored by Lebogang Manyama after beating George Maluleka with a shibobo and finishing calmly from a tight angle to restore the lead for the home side.
Amakhosi striker, Willard Katsande came close to scoring with a long range shot five minutes before the break but the ball flew just over the bar.
Walters made a good save from Maluleka’s free kick as the first half ended with City’s lead intact.
The second half saw a resurgent Chiefs dominating and threatening City’s defence on numerous occasions.
Komphela made his first change as early as the 49th minute, with Edmore Chirambadare making way for William Twala. Another change brought Gustavo Páez on for Bernard Parker.
Lehlohonolo Majoro’s shot in the 51st minute was brilliantly stopped by Bvuma to keep Chiefs in the match, and Manyama came close to scoring again in the 53rd minute but his shot went tamely wide.
Maluleka floated a superb set-piece in the 54th minute after Twala was fouled by Vincent Kobola, and Ramahlwe Mphahlele was unlucky to see his flick-on just clear the crossbar.
Bvuma made another great save when he stopped Majoro’s shot in the 56th minute, initiating a Chiefs counter-attack that ended with Páez’s shot blocked by Robyn Johannes.
City coach Eric Tinkler made his first substitution in the 57th minute when he brought on Sibusiso Masina for Bongolethu Jayiya.
In the 59th minute Molangoane received a brilliant pass from Tshabalala but his attempt went over the top.
Seconds later, Kaizer Chiefs were piling up the pressure again. This time, Maluleka received a great pass from Páez but his shot was stopped by Walters.
Maluleka was fouled on the edge of the area in the 54th minute resulting in a free kick. Shabba stepped up to take it but was denied by Walters.
Edmilson was booked in the 65th minute for deliberate handball.
Shabba once again took the free kick and Walters punched the ball away.
City’s second substitution saw Vincent Kobola made way for Joseph Adjei in the 67th minute.
Amakhosi’s relentless attack paid off with just under 20 minutes remaining when Páez drew Walters off his line, before brilliantly finding Molangoane who stroked the ball into an open goal.
City almost replied immediately but somehow Majoro managed to miss a simple tap-in when it looked easier to score.
He was replaced two minutes later by Judas Moseamedi.
Chiefs’ final substitute was George, who came on for Molangoane.
Amakhosi had a great chance to take the lead in the 78th minute but Páez failed to connect with a through-ball and Walters easily collected.
Both Tshabalala for Chiefs and Judas Moseamedi for City had chances to score late on but neither could hit the target. Putsche also went close as the clock ticked towards full time.
City pressure finally paid off when Moseamedi scored the all-important goal in added time to seal the victory for City.
The referee blew the whistle seconds later leaving Chiefs no time to hit back.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
The whole Kaizer Chiefs team for their remarkable fighting spirit: On the strength of this performance, they might easily have won the match if they had converted their chances. Shabba’s sublime goal should also be noted and could well be in the running for goal of the season.
What it means:
The league title race is still wide open. Kaizer Chiefs, now 4th on the log but only four points off top spot, will have to continue fighting and ensure they win their remaining five matches and hope the teams above them slip up as the pressure mounts.
