Steve Komphela was the first to admit that the 3-0 loss at home against Chippa United was a “terrible result. They took advantage of the chances and they got the result they wanted. We looked lethargic and we have to admit that.”
The Kaizer Chiefs coach did, however, point out that “we got enough chances – Dumsani Zuma and Ryan Moon both got two, Siphiwe Tshabalala got one… There were more, although I know that you can’t count them if you don’t take them. It doesn’t matter. Congratulations to Chippa.”
Even Chippa United’s coach Vladislav Heric admitted that Chiefs got two goalscoring opportunities before the visitors netted their first.
Komphela also had to deal with some unfortunate set-backs, because three players had to be taken off due to injury; Ramahlwe Mphahlele (tight hamstring), Teenage Hadebe (ankle) and Erick Mathoho (feeling dizzy after having been elbowed). It meant that Amakhosi had to play the last 15 minutes of the game with 10 men.
A small section of the crowd got violent after the final whistle of the referee. “Losing points is never nice,” the Chiefs coach reflected about supporters being unhappy about the result. “However, the way we lost… We can’t explain it. I will never run away from my responsibilities. I need to be brave and face the situation and protect the players.
“We just need to keep our focus, as we have a Nedbank Cup semifinal coming up. We also still have a lot to play for when it comes to the league. Mathematically, we are still in the title race, and we also have continental ambitions.”
The Glamour Boys are presently in fourth spot on the Absa Premiership log at, having collected 39 points from 26 games.
