“We are excited to get back to action,” says Steve Komphela ahead of Wednesday’s match against Cape Town City. “The team is upbeat and looking forward to play.”
“The Fifa-break gave us a chance to work on a number of aspects in our game that needed attention,” added Komphela. “We played in two friendlies during the break and I thought it gave us an opportunity to put some polishing touches on our tactics.”
The injury report released on Monday shows a Chiefs team that will be without six key players in the foreseeable future. Komphela, however, feels that every negative has a positive. “Any time you lose a squad member, it gives other players an opportunity to show their mettle. We will run lean and mean in defence, but luckily enough we have players capable to switch positions and change the formation when necessary.”
Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Tsepo Masilela, Emmanuel Letlotlo, Teenage Hadebe, Sibusiso Khumalo and Ryan Moon are ruled out of the Cape Town trip due to an assortment of injuries. Erick Mathoho, meanwhile, is serving a two match ban for the red card issued in the last Absa Premiership league encounter against SuperSport United.
“We will field a strong side though,” Komphela comments on the players out due to injury.
Last season Cape Town City collected four points against Amakhosi in home and away matches - a 3-2 loss away and 1-1 draw at home.
City have their own challenges too, despite their recent wins, as Aubrey Ngoma is injured and Lebohang Manyama left for Turkey. Not forgetting Bongolethu Jayiya, who did well for them last season, and who since joined Kaizer Chiefs.
Benni McCarthy took over the coaching reigns at the beginning of this season at the Cape Town-based club, replacing Eric Tinkler who moved to SuperSport United. “Their play has not changed in any way,” Komphela analyses. “They are in a good space at the moment. You can’t beat Wits three times in a short space of time and be taken lightly.
“Coach Benni is doing well in his first season as a coach. Things are going his way at the moment and that bodes well for the future of his coaching career. However, we have a game plan in place and we will use our strength to counter their threats.”
After two matches played, Chiefs find themselves in an unfamiliar 13th position on the log, while City are in a healthy second position.
“We are looking at this match to start collecting maximum points,” concludes Komphela. “We just have to start scoring goals and this match presents us with another opportunity. It is going to be an exciting match to watch but, a win is what we need to begin our onslaught for the honours.”
