The midfield sensation has been a central figure in Amajita’s line-up. “I have been with Amajimbos to the Under-17 World Cup in Chile, back in 2015,” recalls the 17-year-old Meyiwa. “I hope to use that experience in Korea next month.”
Amajita qualified for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in South Korea by virtue of reaching the semi-finals at this year’s Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations held in Zambia.
“I remember during the Cosafa Under-20 championship that we played against big boys, who pushed us and who played at high tempo,” reflects Meyiwa on the long journey towards South Korea.
“Accordingly, as Amajita, we played well at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia. I was privileged to feature in all our games. I will continue to work hard to be ready for Korea.”
“I hear that a lot of people are worried about our group opponents,” comments Meyiwa, who also showed great form with Kaizer Chiefs’ MultiChoice Diski Challenge side. “We know that it is not going to be easy, but we are up to the task. I am back at the club, working hard at training and playing in friendlies, because the MDC is on recess at the moment.”
South Africa is drawn in Group D with Japan, Uruguay and Italy. The 2017 Under-20 World Cup takes place in South Korea from 20 May to 11 June.
