Derby fever has gripped the world this weekend with many other big Derbies taking around the world between many city rivals. There are notable Derbies in Manchester, Casablanca, Cairo and Milan but South Africans Soweto will this afternoon get to enjoy South Africa’s biggest Derby as Kaizer Chiefs host rivals Orlando Pirates in the 174th official Soweto Derby. South Africa’s biggest match takes place at FNB Stadium at 15:30.
Coach Stuart Baxter who is coaching in his 10th official Derby will also be in charge of his 100th league match for Kaizer Chiefs. In the league, Baxter has only lost once to Pirates in 7 league clashes.
The two Soweto giants teams come in the game on the back of contrasting results as Chiefs lost Stellenbosch and Pirates beat newcomers Sekhukhune United in their midweek fixtures.
The teams will be going all out for maximum points so that they can move up the DStv Premiership table. Chiefs are currently in 7th position with 12 points and Pirates are in 6th with 14 points.
Coach Baxter has decided to not make changes to his team with the exception of one forced change at the back that sees Sibusiso Mabiliso coming on for the injured Sifiso Hlanti who tore his Achilles tendon.
Chiefs will keep to their 3-4-3- formation against the Buccaneers.
Daniel Akpeyi keeps his spot as Amakhosi’s keeper.
The defence will have Daniel Cardoso on the left Mulomowandau Mathoho in the middle and Njabulo Ngcobo on the right.
In midfield, Njabulo Blom will operate on the right and Mabiliso on the left playing as wing-backs. Cole Alexander will partner with Phathutshedzo Ńange in Amakhosi’s midfield.
The trusted Amakhosi forward three will see Bernard Parker play on the left, Keagan Dolly running on the right and Khama Billiat leading the attack.
Parker who is playing in his 29th Derby will wear the captain’s armband.
This afternoon’s match officials are referee Victor Hlungwani, who will have Elphas Sithole as his first assistant and the second assistant is Athenkosi Ndongeni. The fourth official is Kenny Mamegwa.
