Amakhosi extended their unbeaten run to nine games following a resounding 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 this past weekend.
However, Mathoho, who starred in the heart of defence in fine style for Steve Komphela’s men, has played down the impact of the win on the team’s bid to reclaim the glory.
The Bafana Bafana centre-back stresses the importance of the team to put behind the success of Saturday night and shift all energy to winning their next league game away to Baroka.
“We played really well on Saturday,” reflects ‘Tower’ on the cup game. “The mindset from the rest of the guys was clear and it’s good that we have progressed to the next round (Last 16) of the Nedbank Cup.
“What we need to remember, however, is that Saturday’s match is over and we must now think about what lies ahead (Baroka FC). The league is a big focus for us and it is so important that we shift all energy to that and make sure that we continue with our good run. Often it’s easy to lose focus after a good cup victory, but we must never forget what is more important.”
The defender is confident that they can extend their unbeaten run and make it seven wins out of ten against a Baroka side that won its first match this past weekend since October 2016, and also close the gap on the leading pack.
“This is a great opportunity for us to stay in touch with the teams above us. This league race is only heating up now.”
“Baroka will feel a bit confident after their win this past weekend, but I think we have enough to get the three points if we can have a similar approach to the one against Stellenbosch. If we play our normal football we can beat any team,” concludes Mathoho.
