Nelson Mandela Bay is the home of this former Glamour Boy, who was born 44 years ago in the city. “It’s great that Chiefs have a store here. It’s a big brand and I am looking forward to join the activation on Saturday.”
Mayo played four seasons for Amakhosi, between 2003 and 2007. His best moments during that period were winning the league titles in 2004 and 2005.
He had come close to winning the league trophy with his previous club, SuperSport United, twice becoming runners-up, but with Chiefs Mayo finally managed to win this precious title.
“It’s all nice to win cup trophies,” the former striker and defender reflects. “However, the best moment for any player is to win a league title. If you have never won the league trophy, it’s as if something is missing, as if you haven’t played. That’s why it was so important to win the league with Chiefs, even twice.”
Mayo started his life as a Glamour Boy as a striker in 2003, but Ted Dumitru moved the lanky player the following season to the position of left-back. Ernst Middendorp, accordingly, moved him in 2005 to the position of centre-back.
“I never minded to play at the back,” he says, “I actually started my professional soccer career as a central defender, before Trott Moloto moved me up-front at Bush Bucks.”
He was from young a die-hard Amakhosi with Lucas Radebe being his favourite.
“I absolutely loved Chiefs while growing up,” Mayo comments, “so it was a dream come true when I signed for the club.
Saturday’s activation at the KC Insurance store will be something not to miss. Besides Mayo, there will be a few players from the present Chiefs squad too. There will also be a DJ and our MC, Vuyo Nyusela, to provide for a lively atmosphere.
The store is located at Shop 114, Pier 14 Mall, 444 Govan Mbeki, North End. It offers insurance-related services as well as exclusive Kaizer Chiefs merchandise.
Shoppers who spend R200 or more on Saturday at the KC Insurance store in Port Elizabeth will get one free ticket for Sunday’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. There are a limited number of tickets available and only one ticket per transition.
If you can’t make the launch on Saturday, please come on Sunday when there will also be an activation at the shop between 10:00 and 11:00 with again a few players in attendance.
“It’s always great to be associated with the Kaizer Chiefs brand,” Mayo concludes. “It’s a big club. I hope many supporters will come and join us at the activation. It will be great to mix with them.”
