Heading into the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC), Chiefs Reserves had their tails up after a record 10-0 win over Chippa United in their previous game. More was therefore expected from coach Zwane and his charges.
“Wits didn’t have many opportunities to score,” continued the Chiefs coach. “We had it all under control. I counted no less than seven one-on-ones with their goalkeeper. It is a huge blow, because I told the boys that we should go for glory this time around. We have worked hard to build the team to this level and now it’s time for results.”
The game went into the break with Wits leading 1-0. “We discussed beforehand that Wits will want to catch us on set-plays and counter-attacks,” added a visibly disappointed Zwane, “and that’s exactly what happened. Their winner came from a corner kick. We are now going back to the training ground and will address this as a concern.”
Amakhosi’s equaliser came via Sizwe Twala in the 48th minute, with Wits’ Phillips Keenan netting both goals from set-pieces.
“We were by far the better team,” Zwane concluded. “We are not discouraged though. We will pick-up the pieces and forge ahead.”
Chiefs are at present in ninth spot on the MDC log with nine points from seven matches, while Wits moved up to third position, having 15 points from the same number of games.
