After another FiFA break that saw six Amakhosi players represent their different national teams in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Chiefs will resume their 2021/22 season with an away DStv Premiership clash against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium in the capital of KwaZulu Natal, Pietermaritzburg.
Before the break, Chiefs won their league game against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, beating them 2-1. On the other hand, hosts Maritzburg United drew 0-0 against Chippa United in their last game.
Chiefs will see Ramahlwe Mphahlele start his first game of this season as he comes on for Njabulo Blom who is not in the team for the match after coming back from national duty. Another one who is back in the starting line-up is Reeve Frosler who comes on for Sbusiso Mabiliso.
Interestingly, striker Leonardo Castro is on the bench after recovering from a long-term injury that saw him miss the Champions League final in July and the start of the new season.
Chiefs are in sixth position on the log after 15 points from ten games. The hosts, Maritzburg are in the eleventh spot with as many points from 10 outings.
Coach Baxter has decided to not make changes to his team with the exception on one forced change at the back that sees Sbusiso Mabiliso coming on for the injured S’fiso Hlanti who tore his Achilles tendon.
Chiefs will keep to their 3-4-3- formation against the Team of Choice.
Daniel Akpeyi is this afternoon’s keeper.
As was the case in the last game, Amakhosi will keep Daniel Cardoso on the left Mulomowandau Mathoho in the middle and Njabulo Ngcobo on the right.
In midfield, Mphahlele will play on the right and Frosler on the left playing as wing-backs. Cole Alexander will continue to partner with Phathutshedzo Ńange in Amakhosi’s midfield.
The attacking trio of Bernard Parker (on the left), Keagan Dolly (on the right) and Khama Billiat (leading the attack) will do the work once again for coach Stuart Baxter.
Parker will wear the captain’s armband.
This match’s officials are referee Luxolo Badi. He will have Cledwin Baloyi as his first assistant and his second assistant is Xolani Boneni. The fourth official Mdudu Thwala.
The eleventh DStv Premiership match of the 2020-21 season between the Phefeni Glamour Boys and Maritzburg will start at 17:30 at Harry Gwala Stadium. No spectators will be allowed in the stadium. The game will be live on SuperSport’s PSL Channel 202 on DStv, with commentary on various SABC Radio stations and regular updates of the match on Twitter @KaizerChiefs.
