Kaizer Chiefs host Cape Town City in an Absa Premiership fixture at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening (kick-off is at 20:15).
Amakhosi beat the Citizens 2-0 in the first round thanks to goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Wiseman Meyiwa.
“We got the better of them in the first round,” reflects Komphela, “and we want to continue where we left off in Cape Town. However, a lot has happened for both teams since then - there have been some changes in personnel which will make it a different ball game come Saturday night.”
FNB Stadium will be the center of attraction with Amakhosi and City standing shoulder to shoulder with equal points on the league table.
“We still have a few injury concerns - Dumsani Zuma is still out with a groin problem, George Maluleka is nursing a calf strain and Gustavo Páez is still troubled by a hamstring injury,” Komphela says, “but we have a quality squad available to select a winning combination from.
“Meanwhile, our medical team works overtime to have Willard Katsande ready. After getting their report, we will take it from there.”
“Cape Town City are not in the chasing pack by default,” Komphela continues. “They play well as a team. They have the experience of Teko Modise and have recently added firepower upfront by bringing in Matthew Rusike. So we will have to be on guard to deal with their threats.”
A win will take Amakhosi’s points tally to 34 and open a lead of three points over the Citizens. Chiefs played to a one-all draw to Bidvest Wits in their last league match, while City lost 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Amakhosi are presently on an eight-match unbeaten run, having last lost against Chippa United on 6 December 2017.
“It is going to be tough game,” Komphela concludes, “but the supporters must brace for another good spectacle. We have been doing well in recent times, hitting a sweet spot and we want to keep that momentum. We have a good game plan and the players have been responding very well to it at training.”
