“We have discussed this as a team and we all agree, this is a must win,” says Steve Komphela. “We have worked very well to prepare and all that’s left is to get the result.”
A head-on collision awaits tonight when Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars meet each other in a Nedbank Cup semifinal at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium (kick-off at 20:15)..
“We beat them two weeks ago in a league fixture,” adds the Chiefs coach, while watching his team going through the paces at pre-match training. “A cup match poses a different dynamics though. There’s a breeze of determination in the camp. The players are fully aware of what is at stake in this one.
“But it won’t be easy, it will be tough - Stars are one of the teams to beat in the league this season and they are always a threat.”
Chiefs and Stars met already twice this season, in league matches. Amakhosi collected four points from these encounters. Bernard Parker and Teenage Hadebe will have fantastic memories from these games. Parker contributed with a goal in the drawn match played at Moses Mabhida, while Hadebe gave the Amakhosi faithful a night to remember at Bethlehem’s Goble Park, scoring the solitary winning goal of the match.
“We have a full squad available to choose the best eleven from,” Komphela continues. “Rama and Tower have returned to training and that augurs well for our prospects, while Teenage will go through a late fitness test.”
The trio of Ramahlwe ‘Rama’ Mphahlele, Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho and Teenage Hadebe didn’t play in the league win against Platinum Stars last week due to injuries and a suspension (Hadebe).
“Paulus Masehe is their reliable player to watch,” the Chiefs coach comments about the Free State Stars squad. “Nhlanhla Vilakazi and Sinethemba Jantjie are also always a handful.”
The Nedbank Cup presents a chance to win silverware for Komphela and his troops. The Nedbank Cup trophy is also an opportunity to play in the continental club competition next season, so the stage is set for an exciting match for the supporters.
