Komphela hopes for a continuation of the fine form the team has shown in recent matches. “We want to build on our current performances. However, it won’t be easy against a Chippa team that’s on a high at the moment.”
Chiefs have also done well in recent fixtures, beating Mamelodi Sundowns, drawing the Soweto Derby, resoundingly brushing aside AmaZulu, which lead to the quarterfinals spot, and collecting a valuable point away against Polokwane City.
Looking at the two teams head to head, Komphela notes, “There’s a small margin separating us when looking at the log positions.” Chiefs occupy 5th position and Chippa are in 6th spot.
“But the league form doesn’t count when it comes to a cup game, as the approach is different. We will not compromise our style of play, although a win is of course paramount to our planning.”
“Chippa have Samuel Juries on form,” says Komphela about Sunday’s opponents. “But we have a couple of guys doing excellently as well. Overall, if you check us at the moment, we are solid in all areas. We have done our homework on Chippa and I hope that what we practiced on the training pitch during the week will be reflected in the match.”
Siyabonga Ngezana, George Maluleka and Joseph Molangoane all bagged Man of the Match awards in recent games. “This augurs well for us,” the Chiefs coach remarks. “Our supporters are going to be treated to a game of good football. Chippa like to play positive soccer and I don’t see them changing that. Under Tebogo Moloi, they’ve even added more when it comes to going forward.
“However, we will deal with all that. The look and feel in our camp is encouraging. The lads are looking sharp. We are hungry for silverware and this game is an opportunity to advance to the next round and get closer to lifting a trophy.”
The match venue is Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, which is anticipated to be full to capacity. Kick-off is at 15:30.
