Kaizer Chiefs jetted off to Angola mid-morning on Sunday for the second leg of their CAF Champions League first round encounter against Angolan side Primeiro De Agosto, on a specially arranged Charter flight as a result of Covid-19 restrictions currently being implemented in Angola. Chiefs will be targeting a win in Luanda when they face Primeiro on Tuesday afternoon with kick off for the game scheduled for 16h00 local time and 17h00 in South Africa.

The sides played out a 0-0 draw when they met at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on the 23rd December 2020 in the first leg where they had several opportunities to have taken an advantage with them to Angola. This is Chiefs first trip to Angola in over two decades.   Their last journey to the country saw them face Inter Clube of Luanda, in the first leg of the 2001 CAF Cup final, a game which ended 1-1 on the 17th November 2001. Chiefs then won the second leg 1-0 at Ellis Park on the 1st December 2001 courtesy of a Patrick Mabedi penalty to win the game 2-1 on aggregate and lift the cup.

Amakhosi travel to Angola with a squad of 18 players lead by head coach Gavin Hunt who will be assisted by Dillon Sheppard.  There is also good news as Chiefs leading striker from the 2019-20 campaign, Samir Nurković, who missed the start of the current season through injury, is part of the Chiefs travelling contingent and in all likelihood will make his first appearance of the 2020-21 season during the game in Angola.

Chiefs who are due to land in Angola at 14h00 on Sunday afternoon local time were hoping to train in the hot and humid conditions of Luanda to acclimatize but they have been informed that because of Angola’s strict Coronavirus lockdown regulations currently in effect, they would be unable to hold a training session on Sunday. The first training session in Angola is now scheduled for Monday.

Chiefs will be looking to make history in Luanda as Primeiro De Agosto have won all three of their previous CAF Fixtures at home against South African teams.  They defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a group game in 1997 and won 1-0 in a first round first leg game against Bidvest Wits who were coached by Gavin Hunt at the time, on 7th March 2018, before winning the tie on penalties after losing the second leg 1-0 in Johannesburg. Those ties against Pirates and Wits were in the CAF Champions League games.  They also faced Sundowns in the first round in the CAF Cup in 2003 winning 2-0 at home in the first leg before a 2-0 away loss in the second leg, they subsequently were eliminated on penalties.

Victory for Chiefs or a draw with goals which will see them progress on away goal at the 11th November Stadium will see Amakhosi move onto the group stages for the first time, should the game end 0-0 the match will head straight to a penalty shoot-out as per CAF Regulations.

Chiefs will return from Luanda on Wednesday morning and are expected back in Johannesburg just after lunch time on the 6th January.
