Bernard Parker began his 11th league campaign with Kaizer Chiefs by captaining Amakhosi as they drew 0-0 with TS Galaxy in their opening league game on Sunday, in the process making history and setting another important milestone with the Club.
Parker joined a select group of Chiefs players who have managed to feature in 10 opening league games of a new season with Chiefs in the PSL era, joining Thabo Mooki and Itumeleng Khune as players since 1996-97 who have featured the most times in the opening league game of a different season for Chiefs.
Since joining Chiefs ahead of the 2011-12 season, Parker only missed out on starting the opening game in the 2014-15 season, and has featured in the team’s opening league game in 10 of 11 seasons, with Sunday’s game being the seventh season in succession that he featured in Chiefs opening league game.
Only Mooki and Willard Katsande, who featured in the opening league games in nine successive campaigns, and Khune, who played in 8 opening league games in succession, have featured in more successive league games for Chiefs in their opening league games of a PSL season.
For Parker – who was this week named as club vice-captain for the season by coach Stuart Baxter – the match against TS Galaxy was his 260th league appearance for Chiefs and his 355th game for the club overall. He has scored 58 goals in these games and one more goal will see him overtake Siphiwe Tshabalala as Chiefs all-time top scorer in the PSL era in all competitions.
He will also be looking to catch up to Tshabalala and become the Club’s leading scorer in league games since the formation of the PSL. Currently, Parker has scored 45 league goals for Chiefs while Tshabalala has 49.
Parker recently said in an interview with www.kaizerchiefs.com that “wherever the coach will put me, every time you see Bernard Parker, he will give his 120% for the team”.
