1 – The first-ever game between Chiefs and Pirates took place on the 20th of January 1970 in the Rogue Cup third place play-off, just two weeks after the formation of Chiefs on 7th January 1970.
2 – Keagan Dolly, having scored on his league derby debut against Pirates in the earlier meeting between the sides this campaign, is looking to become just the second Chiefs player in the PSL era to score for Chiefs in both of his first two league games in a single campaign against Pirates.
The other was David Obua in 2005-06. Siphiwe Tshabalala also scored home and away in the 2011-12 season against Pirates, but it was not his first derby outing.
3 – Having won their last two league games against Pirates, another win will see Chiefs win three league games in succession over Pirates for the first time since the 1991 and 1992 seasons, when they won four league games in a row against Pirates.
4 – Victory for Chiefs will see Stuart Baxter lead Amakhosi to their 4th league win over Pirates with him at the helm. He will join Ernst Middendorp as the coach in the PSL era with the most league wins over Pirates.
5 – Daniel Cardoso and Leonardo Castro both have four goals in this fixture in all competitions. One more goal for either will see them become Chiefs’ top scorer in the Soweto Derby in the PSL era. Cardoso has three league goals and one in a cup game, while Castro’s goals are two in the league and two in the Cup.
A goal for Cardoso will see him move above Siyabonga Nomvethe and Siphiwe Tshabalala and become Chiefs’ top scorer in league games against Pirates since 1996-97.
6 – The last five league meetings between the teams have produced a winner, with Chiefs winning four to Pirates one win. This is the longest sequence of games in the PSL Era that has seen a winner between the teams, the last time this fixture produced a winner in six successive league games was between 1989 and 1992 when seven games had a winner, with Chiefs winning six and Pirates one.
7 – Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is undefeated in 7 league derbies as coach against Orlando Pirates (W3 D4). Since 1996-97 no Chiefs coach has gone through this many league derbies without losing to Pirates.
8 – Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung, once an Orlando Pirates player, scored 8 goals against his former club as a Chiefs player.
9 – Chiefs went 9 league games without a win against Pirates (D6 L3), between 7th March 2015 and 9th February 2019. The run was ended with a 3-2 Chiefs home win on the 9th November 2019. It was Chiefs’ longest ever winless run in league games against Pirates.
10 – Twice has a match between the sides produced 10 goals, the first ever encounter between the teams in the 1970 Rogue Cup ended 6-4 for Pirates, while Chiefs won 7-3 in the second leg of the 1972 Champion of Champions Final.
19 – The fastest goal in the history of the derby match came after just 19 seconds from Mabhuti Khenyeza in Durban in November 2007, in a league game that ended 2-2. 19 is also the number of goals Chiefs’ record goal scorer Ace Ntsoelengoe has in derby games for Amakhosi against Pirates.
42 – Chiefs have won 42 of their previous 101 league games against Pirates, losing 23 and drawing 36.
52 – This will be the 52nd PSL era league game between the teams, of these Chiefs have 15 wins to Pirates 12 and the remaining 24 games have ended in a draw.
78 – The number of different players who have scored for Chiefs in official games against Pirates.
102 – The teams will meet in a league game for the 102nd time, the first league meeting was on 24th April 1971, a game Chiefs won 4-3 on the 24th April 1971.
175 – This will be the 175th game between Pirates and Chiefs in all competitions since their first clash in the Rogue Challenge Cup third place play-off on the 24th January 1970. Chiefs lead with 71 wins to 44, there have been 54 draws and 5 abandoned games.
223 – Chiefs have scored 223 goals in their previous 174 games against Pirates, they have scored more than their opponents, who have netted 189.
