Kaizer Chiefs will be eyeing a place in the group stages of the African Champions League when they face Angolan outfit Primero De Agosto over two legs in the first round. Amakhosi overcame PWD Bamenda of Cameroon 1-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys will face the Angolans at home on 23 December at FNB Stadium in the first leg. Chiefs will then travel for the second leg to Luanda to face Primero at the Estádio Nacional 11 de Novembro, on the 5 or 6 January 2021.
This will be Chiefs first meeting against Angolan opponents in the CAF Champions League although the club’s finest hour in African Club competition came against Primero’s counterparts Inter Clube of Luanda, in the 2001 CAF Cup Winners Cup Final. Chiefs overcame Inter Clube drawing the first leg away from home 1-1 back in 2001 and then winning the second 1-0 at home, to lift the cup 2-1 on aggregate. Those games were Chiefs’ only previous encounters in African competition against Angolan opponents.
Primero have faced South African clubs in the CAF Champions League previously, defeating Orlando Pirates home and away in the 1997 group stages while they faced Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt’s Wits team in the 2018 First round. Primero won the first leg at home 1-0 with Wits winning the second leg in Johannesburg by the same score-line to send the game to penalties. The Angolans won 3-2 on spot kicks to advance. Current Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler, who was a Wits player at the time, converted his penalty in the shootout when he took Wits’ fourth kick but was unable to prevent them going down. Their other game in African competitions against South African opponents was a 2003 CAF Cup first round clash which ended 2-2 on aggregate with Sundowns winning 9-8 on penalties.
The game on 23 December will kick off at 18:00.
Chiefs will confirm the details of the second leg, as well as the club’s travel itinerary for the trip to Angola.
