Ngcobo has featured in the past two editions of the Derby and harbours good memories. “In the first one we played to a 1-1 draw. Derbies are always difficult games. Wherever we go, people are reminding us that not only is this an important match, it’s crucial to win. Our supporters want to have the bragging rights and that’s what we plan to give them, an early Christmas present.”
Chiefs and Pirates played to a 2-2 draw in last season’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge. Amakhosi were triumphant, however, walloping their rivals 6-3, when the two team met in the 2017/2018 MultiChoice Diski Shield.
Of the current Chiefs players, Happy Mashiane and Reamohetse Lekoatsa were on the scoresheet in the 6-3 win and Itumeleng Shopane netted in the 2-2 draw. Surely, with those good memories, these players will relish the opportunity to repeat the achievement on Sunday.
“We are ready and working hard,” remarks Ngcobo. “We must just find the back of the net. We have been creating many chances in the games played so far this season but have struggled at times to finish. It is important that, as the captain, I rally the guys to do their best.”
The match between Chiefs and Pirates will be played, amongst other Diski Derbies, at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday, November 18. Preceding the Soweto Derby, which kicks off at 14:00, will be Baroka FC against Polokwane City at 10:00 and Free State Stars against Bloemfontein Celtic at 12:00.
Free tickets are available at the stadium on Thursday and Friday.
