Maluleka played his first official game this season a fortnight ago against Free State Stars. Chiefs won the away match 2-0 with ‘Mido’ showing brilliant form, which earned him the Man of the Match award.
“I enjoyed that match,” the midfielder confirms with a broad smile on his face. “We did well as a team.”
But Maluleka had to miss the next match against AmaZulu due to an injury. “I had a grass burn on the side of my thigh, which got infected. The doctor advised me to take a bit of a rest to let the wound heal properly.”
He’s looking forward to the game against Highlands Park which will be played at Makhulong Stadium in his birthplace, Tembisa.
“I used to play there from the age of six or seven, participating in youth games and tournaments,” Maluleka reflects. “It was wonderful. I used to score a lot of goals.”
Chiefs are presently in third position on the league table with 13 points from eight matches, while Highlands Park are in ninth spot with seven points from six games. Amakhosi have won their last three matches, beating respectively Cape Town City FC, Free State Stars and AmaZulu FC.
“Highlands Park are a good side,” ‘Mido’ comments, “it’s always difficult against them, as they are fighters. They also have a very experienced coach in Owen da Gama.
“We just need to keep our focus and be mentally strong. We have now won three games in a row and that has given us a lot of faith. We want to build on that. We want to keep the momentum.”
Chiefs will face Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium on Tuesday, 2 October (kick-off is at 19:30).
Tickets are sold at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide at a cost of R40.
