“We have a strong mind-set here,” emphasises Páez. “Of course we are disappointed with the current form and we want to make it right.”
Kaizer Chiefs travel to Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace looking to overcome the slump in form that saw them losing the battle to win the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title.
“We have next season in mind,” continues the Venezuelan striker, “but first things first. We have to win these two games and close the season on a high. We are professionals and know that we are serving a very hopeful and faithful supporters base.”
Coach Steve Komphela and his team completed their routine pre-match training on Tuesday morning before taking the trip to the North West Province. “The coach told us to remain focused,” concludes Páez. “He also reminded us to finish the chances that we create.”
First Round Results
Kaizer Chiefs 1-1 Platinum Stars
It was Hendrick Ekstein who cancelled out Robert Ng’ambi’s controversial first half goal in the first round match played in September 2016 at FNB Stadium. It was an unlucky evening for Amakhosi because the replay showed the ball didn’t cross the goalline, but a goal was given to Stars nonetheless.
The Log
Kaizer Chiefs occupy fifth spot with 47 points and Platinum Stars are in 11th position on the log. Amakhosi ended the 2015/16 season in fifth place with 46 points from 30 matches. Wins in the two remaining fixtures will see Amakhosi ending the season with an improved 53 points in the bag.
Injuries
Siphiwe ‘Shabba’ Tshabalala travelled with the team and is available for selection after recovering from injury.
Coach Komphela confirmed, “Shabba is back after missing the last two matches. Sibusiso (Khumalo) and Brilliant (Khuzwayo), however, are not available for selection.”
The duo is likely to miss the last two games of the season to give them a chance to recover fully for next season.
Suspensions
Willard Katsande missed the Polokwane City match because of a one match suspension, but he’s set for a return against Stars.
Matches between Chiefs and Stars are always intriguing to watch and the supporters will be looking forward for another humdinger.
Kick-off at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Wednesday, 17 May, is at 19:30.
