Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says Amakhosi supporters “expect and deserve more” from the team and has assured them it won’t be long before the team turns the corner and starts producing positive results.
“I want to applaud Amakhosi supporters for their support. They have been patient for some time now and they should not give up on us. Things are going to turn around and very soon will start looking good, that I must say. The supporters expect more and deserve more from us. This is football. Things can somehow change. We’re working hard to put things together,” a contrite Akpeyi said ahead of today’s DStv Premiership clash in Durban against AmaZulu.
He called on the Amakhosi to be “mentally sound” as they travel to face Usuthu in this important fixture.
The Nigerian Super Eagles shot-stopper will be looking to lead from the back, as he did in making some important saves to keep a clean sheet in the goalless draw in Amakhosi’s last league clash against Marumo Gallants.
“The clean sheet is for the team. I have to do my job, the defenders have to do their job, the midfielders and the strikers, it’s just unfortunate we couldn’t get a goal on that day. The game against AmaZulu is going to be a tough game. They have been on a winning run for some time, even though they have their own hiccups. For us, we’ve been coming up gradually. We hope to take the momentum from the last game we played and improve on it by at least 20 percent. I believe we can do much better. It’s going to be a game where those who take their chances will win it all,” says Akpeyi of today’s game.
He is appreciative of still being part of the Chiefs squad and also being called up again by Nigeria for their crucial upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“It takes hard work to be part of your national team and also to be part of a team like Kaizer Chiefs. It has not been easy, but I’m grateful to have the energy to sustain both sides. I’m working harder to help both sides whenever I am called upon,” says Akpeyi.
