“The work continues but a win is important,” says coach Gavin Hunt. “We still have a long way to go. We could have made the game safer much earlier. I do not know how many chances we missed in the first half. If we had scored earlier, it could have made it easy and given us an opportunity to experiment with a few things in the second half.”
Amakhosi’s dominant performance was rewarded with a 0-1 win scored from an own goal with Chippa United under the immense pressure from Lebogang Manyama’s telling cross.
“We set it up in a way that a football team must play,” adds Hunt. “I thought we were much better in terms of how we want to play and how I want to see us play. Overall, the players showed up on Tuesday night. I thought Manyama, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Njabulo Blom did well for us, and Zulu was exceptional playing in an unusual left back. Zulu did excellently and I hope to see him dishing out more of this kind of performances.”
With three official games under his belt as Amakhosi’s mentor, Hunt says: “There were more signs of a proper team on Tuesday. We played some unbelievable football at times which was good to watch. Siyabonga Ngezana is a typical uncompromising defender. Obviously, he needs game time and as you know with center backs, they mature with age. He is coming along nicely.
Amakhosi will take this win to their next opponents, Orlando Pirates in the first leg of the MTN8 Cup semifinals on Saturday.
“Let us see how it goes, consistency is the most important thing in the game,” concludes Hunt. “We have a huge game on Saturday against Pirates. I am disappointed that we have not scored a goal from our strikers but let us win more games and collect points and get ourselves in the leaderboard. Anyone could have got a few goals but we will work on that. Team first and individual performances will follow.”
