Euphoria has taken root in the soccer environment following Amakhosi’s scintillating 2-0 win on the road over Cape Town City, which had shown excellent form so far this season.
“There's a buzz in the camp, let alone in the streets,” the Kaizer Chiefs coach continues. “The feedback that we are receiving is encouraging and the players are aware of the excitement they bring to the people when they play good football and win matches.”
This sense of anticipation is clearly in the air ahead of the visit by the somewhat limping, but always dangerous Bidvest Wits. The Students are not enjoying the best of times at the moment, which makes Komphela cautiously optimistic ahead of their 18:00 appointment at the FNB Stadium tonight (Saturday evening, 16 September).
“Soccer is a funny business,” the coach says. “We have to guard against complacency and manage the high spirit in the camp. Meanwhile, with them (Wits), these are trying times for them and they will try to use our game to rebound from their recent disappointing results.”
Also, historically, the affairs between Amakhosi and the Students have always been tantalising. Last season, Wits beat Chiefs 2-1 at Bidvest Stadium with Lorenzo Gordinho scoring Chiefs’ solitary goal.
Amakhosi, however, won 1-0 in the second round with Gustavo Páez finding the back of the net in the dying minutes of that encounter.
We need this win as much as we needed the win in Cape Town. We don't have the luxury of either this or that one,” Komphela comments. “We have to maintain the momentum going into every next fixture.
“We are confident though, and particularly pleased to witness the players showing eagerness to play. We are playing at home and it is important to win at home.”
Komphela is not expected to ring changes on Saturday. Despite the long injury list, one cannot confirm Chiefs’ starting line-up, especially with the likes of Dumsani Zuma and Khotso Malope waiting to make their debut. Furthermore, Joseph Molangoane, Edmore Chirambadare and William Twala are also waiting in the wings to make an impact.
