Youth Month is held in June to celebrate the significant contribution that the youth made to achieve South Africa’s new democratic dispensation.
Meyiwa spoke on his return from the Cosafa Cup, having won the Plate Medal after Bafana Bafana beat Botswana 3-0.
“Life is a journey. It becomes difficult if you lose focus,” the talented midfielder points out, while highlighting words of inspiration from his mom Ngenzeni. “My mom always encourages me to work hard. So far so good, I can see light at the end of the tunnel.”
“I am going to college after June and am looking to register for a Sports Management course,” reveals Meyiwa, before speaking a bit more about the Cosafa Cup. “I played two matches and I am grateful to the coaching staff at Bafana Bafana. I am happy to have gotten game time, but at the same time disappointed not have properly won the Cosafa Cup.”
Instead, Zimbabwe emerged as the victors of the Cosafa Cup after beating Zambia in the final.
“Luck was not on our side,” Meyiwa explains, who is presently enjoying a short break from football, “we tried our best and we will take the positives and move forward. The Bafana camp was great, because we gelled as a team and the spirit was great. Most of us played together from the junior levels.
“For example, I played with Lyle Foster and Khulekani Kubheka from the Under-17s upwards. It is great to see us slowly graduating to the senior levels. Youth must take this as an encouragement to reach for their dreams.
“I just wish that more youth would support the team,” Meyiwa concludes, before adding, “I can’t wait to get back into the field in Gold & Black. I’m encouraging the youth to attend matches in numbers. Sport offers youth an opportunity to exercise their talents and stay away from wrong doing.”
Kaizer Chiefs youngsters Ryan Moon and Siyabonga Ngezana also featured prominently in Bafana Bafana’s Cosafa squad. Another Amakhosi youngster, goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma, was the deputy to Reyaad Pieterse for games of the South African national team.
