Kaizer Chiefs (0) 2 (Zuma 67’, 90+3’)
A much changed Kaizer Chiefs team overcame a stern test against Chippa United with a 2-0 victory in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday evening. A second half brace from Dumsani Zuma saw Chiefs win their fifth Absa Premiership game in a row. The game against the Chili Boys was both a physical and mental test for Chiefs with a Derby looming on Saturday against Pirates. But Amakhosi kept their focus and got the points they needed from their trip to the Eastern Cape.
The home side tested Bruce Bvuma in the Chiefs goal early on, with Boikanyo Komani trying his luck from distance twice in the opening twelve minutes. His first shot from around 25 yards from goal was easily handled by Bvuma. His second go at goal in the 12th minute a rasping long range drive had Bvuma diving at full stretch to push the ball wide for a corner.
Chippa were forced into an early change when Elvis Moyo was stretchered off injured in the 18th minute. He was replaced by Sandile Mthethwa.
Siyabonga Ngezana did well in the 28th minute to rise highest to meet a corner from the left with his head. He was able to get between Chippa goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb and defender Mthethwa, but his effort went just over the cross bar.
A Chiefs team sporting eight changes from their Telkom Knockout Cup quarterfinal win against Orlando Pirates over the past weekend, were beginning to take a grasp of the game and in the 34th minute Samir Nurković sent in an inviting cross from the right. The ball evaded the Chippa defence and made its way to the back post but neither a diving Lazalous Kambole nor a sliding Dumsani Zuma were able to make contact with ball.
The hosts were struggling with injuries as the first half drew to a close. Komane left the pitch with a fractured thumb and Frederic Nsabiyumva also left the field holding his back, all the while Chippa were playing for around five minutes with ten men before Gregory Damons and Kurt Lentjies eventually came on for Komane and Nsabiyumva.
In referees optional time at the end of the half, a corner from the right by Philani Zulu for Chiefs created havoc in the Chippa defence as it curled goal-wards. It took a clearing header off the fine from Xolani Maholo away to safety.
Five minutes into added time at the end of the half, a delightfully floated ball by Willard Katsande found Nurković on the right of the Chippa 18-yard area. He struck the ball on the half volley, it floated over Tignyemb and crashed against the up right.
The first half ended 0-0.
Coach Middendorp made his first change at the start of the second half by bring George Maluleka on for Kgotso Moleko.
Some neat interplay between George Maluleka and Zuma saw the latter glide into the Chippa danger zone before playing the ball to his right where he found Kambole in space. He drove the ball goal-wards at the first time of asking but drilled his effort wide.
Chiefs made the breakthrough in the 67th minute when Zuma scored a well taken goal, after being found by Katsande he took the ball forward and just inside the Chippa 18-yard area. He struck the ball delightfully with the inside of his boot past a despairing Tignyemb to put Chiefs 1-0 ahead.
In the 70th minute, Leonardo Castro came on for Kambole.
The last change saw Ngezana make way for Lorenzo Gordinho in the 82nd minute of the match.
Amakhosi managed to negotiate some late Chippa pressure and scored a second two minutes into referee’s optional time at the end of the second half. Zuma scored his second after being played in to space by Castro, Zuma stormed into the Chippa 18-yard area and let fly goal-wards. His shot somehow creeping past Tignyemb to see Chiefs through to a fifth successive league win.
With this victory, the Glamour Boys have managed to build up a seven-point lead at the top of the table against second placed Sundowns who drew on Wednesday evening against Baroka.

It was ding-dong affair with both teams creating and asking questions, but nothing was converted in the first half. The key moment came in the second half when Dumsani Zuma scored the first goal of the match and adding another at the death, ensuring Chiefs travel back home with maximum points.
Most Valuable Player (MVP):
Bernard Parker put in a good shift in midfield after playing his first full 90 minutes following his recovery. Nurković was another player who did well for Chiefs as he kept Chippa’s defence busy throughout the match. Another great performance came from the brace scorer Dumsani Zuma, but ultimately, captain Willard Katsande was handed Man of the Match award for his hard work in the middle of the park and providing an assist for Zuma’s first goal.
