Gordinho returns to the squad for Derby

One thing that is always important for a coach heading into a key match against your arch rivals is to always have your best troops available for selection, and that is no different for Kaizer Chiefs head Steve Komphela.

“We have a clean bill of health,” comments coach Steve Komphela about this afternoon’s Soweto Derby. “All the players are fit and ready to go. The Derby is a big game and a showpiece for all South Africans.”

“As usual, we’ve prepared well for this game,” Komphela continues, adding that any talk about Amakhosi being the team in form and therefore likely to win the Derby is premature. “We observed Pirates’ changes in the technical team, with Kjell Jonevret now in charge. We will have to counter any of their plans with our enterprising way of playing.”

Meanwhile, Lorenzo Gordinho has returned to the Kaizer Chiefs squad after sitting out last week’s clash against Ajax Cape Town due to suspension.

“The boys looked good at training this week,” adds Komphela, “and the confidence is high.”

The stage is set. Battle lines are drawn and for every South Africa’s soccer supporter all roads should today lead to the FNB Stadium for the first Soweto Derby of 2017.

Kaizer Chiefs host their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates this afternoon in an Absa Premiership (kick-off is at 15:30), gates open at 11:30.
