We have to win - Moleko

“We have to win,” comments Kgotso Moleko about Saturday’s Absa Premiership match against Bidvest Wits at Bidvest Stadium. “We are close to log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and we want to minimise the point gap.”

The right-back was in fine form in the goalless draw against Sundowns last week. It was Moleko’s first game since the 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town on 16 December 2017.

“I always have to be ready when called upon,” the 28-year-old stresses. “It went well, despite lacking a bit of match fitness, because of not having played much. As a result of this, I felt some muscle strain towards the end of the Sundowns game, especially as we were really pushing, trying to win it.”

Ramahlwe Mphahlele played the first two league games after which an injury kept him away from a starting berth. It was Moleko who took over the role of right-back in the team, but he sustained a knee injury in the Macufe Cup clash against Bloemfontein Celtic on 8 October 2017. Moleko in turn was replaced by Joseph Molangoane, who did excellently at right-back, which has become a very attacking position since coach Steve Komphela decided to have three centre-backs in the starting XI.

Chiefs are presently in third position on the league table, having collected 30 points from 19 games. Last season’s league winners Wits had a difficult start to the season, but their form has improved in recent week. They are in 13th spot with 21 points from the same number of matches.

Moleko did start in the one-all draw against Wits in the first round.

About Saturday’s encounter against the Clever Boys, the right back says, “They are going to try to score first after which they can play their game. That’s why we have to make sure that we are the ones who will put the ball in the back of the net first.

“They have a good side and a good coach. We just have to be ready and focused.”

The league clash between Chiefs and Wits will be played at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening, 3 February (kick-off at 18:00).

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers at R80.
