The Kaizer Chiefs development academy enjoyed another fruitful weekend which saw victories in both the SAFA Gauteng Development League (GDL) and DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) on the domestic front, as well as international success for four Amakhosi players who in helping the national U-20 team win the 2024 COSAFA U-20 Cup in Mozambique.
Ofentse Kgosana, Sfiso Timba, Takalani Mazhamba and Gopolang Taunyana played key roles in the COSAFA triumph, with Timba and Kgosana finding the net against Lesotho and Comoros respectively, during the group phase. By virtue of lifting this regional trophy, Amajita have qualified for next year’s U-20 AFCON finals tournament. We congratulate our boys for representing the Club with distinction on the international stage.
Manqoba Ozoemana produced a man-of-the-match performance as Amakhosi Reserves maintained their place at the top of the league standings following a tough goalless draw against third-placed Stellenbosch FC at the DDC Festival, held at the Lucas Moripe stadium on Sunday afternoon. The result takes them to 13 points from their six matches. They will play Richards Bay FC in their forthcoming fixture on Saturday, 13 October in another DDC Festival match, this time at the Sugar Ray Xulu stadium in Claremont, just outside Durban.
Meanwhile, at the Tsakane stadium on Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs swept past East Rand Athletic Club, winning all four GDL encounters without so much as conceding a single goal. The Amakhosi U13s opened the day with a 4-0 win over ERAC U13s and were matched by the U15s straight afterwards, who won by the same scoreline. The U17s then beat their counterparts 2-0, a score repeated by the U19s, to finish the round in style.
Next weekend sees a double header away from home when Amakhosi travel to meet Joburg City at the Greek Sporting Club on Saturday 12 October, before a short trip to Tshwane the following day, Sunday, 13 October, where they will play against TUKS at the University of Pretoria (TUKS) Sports Grounds.
