“The hard work paid off,” Yusuf Bunting simply reflected on becoming the Best Player and Top Goalscorer at the SAB Under-21 National Championships. The Kaizer Chiefs striker had a brilliant tournament, helping his side Gauteng beat USSA (Universities Sports South Africa) in the final.

Bunting scored a magnificent 12 goals in five matches, including two hat-tricks. One of these came in the final when the talented Glamour Boy scored all Gauteng’s goal in a game that finished in a three-all draw. Gauteng eventually won on penalties.

The SAB Under-21 National Championship started last week and finished on Sunday at Soweto’s Nike Centre.

Bunting plays for Chiefs’ reserve team and participated last season in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC). He was joined in the Gauteng side by his Amakhosi teammate, left-back Happy Mashiane, who scored the winning penalty in the final’s shoot-out.

Interestingly enough, five other players, who are with Chiefs, were selected for USSA being chosen as footballers studying at North West University. They were goalkeeper Nzalamo Mbiza, central midfielder McCoy Sithole, attacking midfielder Bongani Mabena, winger Sibongiseni Hlengwa and striker Tebogo Galane.
