Kaizer Chiefs Reserve side will play today against Platinum Stars in their opening game of the MultiChoice Diski Shield (MDS) at Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium, Botshabelo (Free State), at 12:00.

The MultiChoice Diski Shield follows the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, which finished in February with the Chiefs Reserves finishing in fifth spot. Platinum Stars finished in 15th place.

The MDS is a competition that is divided into two phases – a group stage and a knock-out phase. The group stage will be played over one round. There are four groups, while the side topping each group will proceed to the semifinals. Kaizer Chiefs are in a group with Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars.

“We want to win every game we play,” says Chiefs Reserve side coach Arthur Zwane. “We will go all out to get the three points, playing our normal game.”

Amakhosi’s reserves did well in the second half of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge, although coach Zwane still feels that “we conceded too many goals”.

The Chiefs Reserve side has many talented youngsters, including the attacking midfielder Katlego Ntsabeleng and both centre-backs, Tristan Moses and Njabulo Blom.

Asanda Dyani and Reamohetse Lekoatsa were the top goalscorers in the MDC, each scoring six goals.

“They can both play as a winger and a striker,” comments coach Zwane about the two players. “That’s also what we want, developing players who can play at more than one position. An example is Itumeleng Shopane. We have used him in the past as a number 10, but more recently also as a winger and even right-back. It’s all about getting these youngsters ready for the first team.”

Chiefs beat Platinum Stars 4-2 in the MDC with Yusuf Bunting netting a brace, while the other goals were scored by Moses and Shopane.

The game will also be broadcasted live today (Sunday, 8 April) on the DStv channel, SuperSport 4 (from 11:55).
