On that fateful day two years ago, 43 soccer fans lost their lives in a stampede during a league match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
On Friday morning, as a mark of respect for all those who lost their lives, a memorial services just outside Gate 4 at the rugby stadium will be conducted. The service is expected to start at 8am.
Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chief Executive Trevor Phillips said that South African soccer should reflect, as well as look ahead. “Those fans died for the sport they loved, and they should never be forgotten,” he said.
"Mistakes were made, and we should learn from them to ensure that another tragedy like the one at Ellis Park never occurs."
