Kaizer Chiefs upcoming game against Thanda Royal Zulu will be the Club’s 400th league fixture since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in July 1996.



Some Kaizer Chiefs Absa Premiership milestones since 1996.



10 August 1996, Kaizer Chiefs under the guidance of then coach, Jeff Buttler play their first game in the Premiership Season 1996/7 against Jomo Cosmos at FNB Stadium. Chiefs win by 1-0 via Thabang Lebese’s lone strike. Chiefs finish the season in second position as Manning Rangers become inaugural winners of the Premier League.



02 August 1998, Thabang Lebese becomes the only player to score in three opening fixtures for the Club in the Premier League when he scores the only goal of the match as Chiefs beat Dynamos. “Banda” had also found the net in the same fixture against African Wanderers the previous season.



23 August 1998, returnee, Pollen Ndlanya scores the Club’s first hat-trick in the 5-0 drubbing of hapless, Hellenic. Lifa Gqosha and Robson Muchichwa score the other two goals. “ Trompies” as the player was affectionately known wins the PSL Player of the Year award at the end of the season.



31 July 1999, Kaizer Chiefs new sensation, a product of Kaizer Chiefs development, Jabu Pule (now Mahlangu) makes his debut for the Club in a 4-1 drubbing of Amazulu. He scores in his debut and become a household name in the Kaizer Chiefs colours.



05 September 1999, current coach, Muhsin Ertugral takes over from interim coach, Terror Sephoa. His first game is against Bloemfontein Celtic away and Chiefs come back with a point following a goalless draw.



2000, Scintillating Siyabonga Nomvethe wins PSL Player’s Player and PSL Player of the Season award following a brilliant season for Kaizer Chiefs.



2001, Muhsin Ertugral guides Kaizer Chiefs to a second position in the Premiership. This is for the third time The Amakhosi come second in the league since its inception in 1996.



2002, Sensational Jabu “Shuffle” Pule (Mahlangu) wins PSL Player’s Player of the Year award.



29 May 2004, The Glamour Boys win the league for the first time since 1992 when they beat Soweto rivals, Moroka Swallows by 2-0 with goals from Collins Mbesuma and David Radebe. The “General”, Tinashe Nengomasha is the biggest winner at the PSL end of the season awards as he walks home with Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year awards.



May 2005, The Glamour Boys under the guidance of Theodore Dimitru successfully defends the Premiership when they beat Bloemfontein Celtics in their own backyard with a well-taken brace from Collins Mbesuma.

21 January 2007, Ditheko Mototo scores the Club’s 500th goal since the inception of the Premiership against Jomo Cosmos. Sadly, the Amakhosi went on to lose the game by 2-1.



2008, a 20-year-old from Kaizer Chiefs development structures, Itumeleng Khune wins PSL Goalkeeper of the Season Award and Player’s Player of the Year award in his debut season for the Amakhosi. Kaizer Chiefs has the best defence record conceding only 19 goals.



11 January 2009, Nigerian born Zito Ogbonna ensured that the Phefeni Glamour Boys get the perfect start to 2009 when he scorers the only goal of the match against Mamelodi Sundowns. The win sends the packed ‘to the rafters’ Johannesburg Stadium into raptures as it ensures that Amakhosi continues with Club’s 39th year celebrations that kicked off four days earlier.
