It was an anxious wait for Musona on the final day of the season as he eventually scored his 15th league goal with a late penalty as Chiefs defeated AmaZulu 2-1 in Durban.
Despite one of his fellow golden boot chasers Lehlohonolo Majoro opening the scoring for AmaZulu a goal which at the time put him level on 14 goals with Musona, the Chiefs striker explained that he was confident that goal number 15 would come.
“I knew going into the game that there were a number of players who were close to me on the scoring charts, I did not know that Majoro and I were level when he scored. I think that was a good thing otherwise it would have made me anxious.”
After the game I did try and find out what happened with Sundowns and I heard that Nyasha Mushekwi scored a hat trick but I knew that he was on 11 goals before the game. So I was really pleased on a personal level to have finished as the top scorer, but disappointed because we lost out on the league title.”
All the while Musona was denied by the woodwork and a clearance off the line as he and Chiefs pressed for goals against AmaZulu, despite this he knew that the magical goal that would take his goal tally to 15 in the Absa Premiership in 25 starts and three substitute appearances this past season would come.
When the opportunity did come Musona was up to the challenge “It was a nervous time in the game when the penalty came and everyone decided that I should take the kick.
I knew I had to score and thankfully I kept calm and got it past the keeper it was a great relief to get to 15 goals and playing in my first full season that I played regularly, I am pleased to have scored these goals and it is a good platform on which to build for next season.”
In all Musona scored 20 goals in all competitions during the 2010 – 2011 season, he could pick up another two awards on Sunday as he has one of his goals nominated for the Absalutely Awesome goal of the season award., and he is a nominee for the 2010 – 2011 Telkom Knockout Player of the tournament award.
He is the first Chiefs player to end of as the top scorer in the Absa Premiership since Collins Mbesuma in the 2004 – 2005 season.
