Kaizer Chiefs players, Ignacio Miguel and Flavio Da Silva, as well as former Chiefs player and assistant coach, Shaun Bartlett, met up with members of the Joburg Super Kings SA20 cricket team on Sunday afternoon.
The Chiefs contingent were to be part of JSK’s net session on Sunday but sadly the weather put paid to that, and the players were welcomed into JSK’s Johannesburg base, where they interacted with players, Faf Du Plessis, Wiaan Mulder, Nandre Burger, Akeal Hosein, Richard Gleeson and Dian Forrester.
Bartlett, a keen cricketer in his youth, said of the meet-up with the JSK players, “Its great to meet them personally. You don’t get this opportunity too often. You have to pay tribute to Kaizer Chiefs and JSK for collaborating, and giving myself Miguel and Flavio the opportunity to meet the players.”
JSK, and former Proteas captain Du Plessis, said of the collaboration between Chiefs and JSK, “The support from Chiefs is very nice. It was great to see Shaun. He is an icon of South African Football. Unfortunately we were not outside today. It would have been nice to have taught them some cricket shots.”
The JSK skipper and his team are ready for season four of the SA20. “It’s very exciting,” he added, “It’s my favourite time of the year, to play cricket at home in South Africa for the Joburg Super Kings. We are very excited. We have a nice team and hopefully the weather will just play its part.”
For Ignacio Miguel it was his first interactions with cricket players, of which he said, “It was a good experience learning how the vibes in the training camp work. It was a great experience and it was nice to meet the players.”
The Amakhosi defender has pledged his support to JSK in the upcoming season, saying, “I am planning to go to their first game at home on 1 January. I will be there supporting them. They have a new supporter here. I wish them all the best and hope they have a great season.”
Chiefs striker Flavio Da Silva like Miguel has not had much exposure to cricket, but enjoyed the interactions “for me it was a good experience to learn about a new sport. I shared some ideas with the JSK players and am hoping to go to their game on 1st January. Also crazy for me to learn how popular cricket is”.
JSK will begin their SA20 campaign on the 27th December against the Pretoria Capitals in Centurion.
