ABSA final heads to Durbs

Premier Soccer League CEO Trevor Phillips announced on Wednesday that the ABSA Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be played at the ABSA Stadium in Durban on the 20th May.

The game will kick off at 15h00.

There was much consternation as to where the game would be since this past Sunday when it became clear that Chiefs and Pirates would face off in the final. The two Soweto giants last met in a major Cup final 18 years ago in 1988 when the ABSA Cup was still known as the BOB Save Super Bowl.

It was widely felt in many quarters, because of the large following enjoyed by both teams, the game should have been staged at the FNB Stadium as it is the largest venue in the country. With a capacity of 75 000, the FNB Stadium can accommodate 30 000 more than the ABSA Stadium in Durban which has a capacity of 45 000.

Commenting immediately after the conference was over, Kaizer Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung expressed his displeasure at the decision to play the game in Durban. “We were not properly consulted prior to making of this decision and we are not happy about going to Durban,” said Motaung.

When questioned about who would be responsible should there be any security or other related problems in Durban, as the venue is significantly smaller than FNB Stadium, Phillips said “ I am putting my head on the block here as I stand by this decision to play the match in Durban”.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp on hearing that the game would be played in Durban, said “from a football point of view I have no problem with Durban. The stadium is nice and compact and we have played there a couple of times this season. Away from that, I think that by not playing the game in Johannesburg, the PSL, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and most importantly the supporters, will all lose out”.

The PSL also confirmed on Wednesday that tickets for the season’s show piece finale will go on sale nationwide on Friday 5th May 2006, at various Computicket and Shoprite – Checkers stores.
