kaizerchiefs.com took time on Monday afternoon to speak to Bernard Parker following his Man of the Match performance against Moroka Swallows in the Soweto Derby on Saturday.
The current league leading goalscorer grabbed a brace to inspire the Glamour Boys to an emphatic win against their Soweto neighbours, Moroka Swallows.
How did it feel to see your shot finally hitting the back of the net after being unlucky in front of goals in the past couple of games?
Bernard Parker: It is the same feeling you feel when you have won the game but when you score there is that extra special feeling (smiling). It really felt good to score on Saturday but credit should go to the team for the job well done on the night.
Were you starting to feel a bit anxious that you had scored only one goal since the Africa Cup of Nations despite playing well for the team?
Bernard Parker: (Cutting in) Not at all because the team was winning. It would have been more difficult if the team was not winning. We have been playing well and the team has gotten closer during some challenging times and this has been pleasing to see. It is more important for me for the team to do well than me scoring goals.
You were voted Man of the Match for your efforts but then decided to give your prize to your teammate, Siyabonga Nkosi…
Bernard Parker: I thought he did very well for us in the heart of midfield. He worked his socks off and was a box to box player for us winning balls in the heart of midfield and also was instrumental in some of our attacks.
Siya had not played lot of games going to the Swallows game but his performance showed on Saturday that he is one of the important players in the team. I felt on Saturday I did not deserve the Man of the Match award, he did, that is why I gave him the award.
Your gesture was well received in the football circles…
Bernard Parker: The spirit in this squad is amazing and we all get along. We are family. I spoke to Siya a couple of weeks ago when we all felt that the fans were not fair to him. I told him to focus on doing his best and work harder.
He told me that when he gets another chance he will grab it with both hands. We are really pleased to see him doing so well. He was of course very happy when I presented him with the Man of the Match award after the game.
Your brace on Saturday came on week you signed a three-year-extension the Club…
It is a great feeling to have extended my stay at Naturena for a further three years. I am still a supporter of the team and the same applies to my whole family.
I also felt as one of the important players in the team. I am grateful to the Management for showing faith once more in my abilities. I will continue to give 100% every time I get to wear the gold and black and give back to the supporters.
What goals have your set yourself between now and June 2016?
Bernard Parker: I want to help the team win the game against Platinum Stars. I also believe we can go and win both the league and cup. However, we all know that we have to take it one game at a time and focus on the job at hand, Platinum Stars at Peter Mokaba on Sunday.
